Neurofeedback, also called EEG Biofeedback is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive, drug-less method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way. There are four divisions of electrical impulses made by our brain; Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta called “brainwaves”. These brainwaves, or frequency bands, tell us which parts of your brain are active and which frequency bands the brain should be using to complete a given task, activity or should be most active during different states of mind. 

Brainwave Frequencies and Daily Life

During normal daily activities such as reading the latest news on your social media feed or following directions in class, certain areas of your brain will need to be active and using the faster frequency called Beta. On the other hand, if after a long day we wish to relax and wind down, a different part of the brain will need to be activated using the slower brainwave frequency called Alpha. Even slower than that would be Delta and theta which are correlated to sleep, meditation, and deep states of relaxation.

Individuals are connected to a computer using the wires and sensors of the EEG, thereby allowing the BrainCore technology and computer system to monitor the brain’s electrical activity. The software database, which is unique to BrainCore, automatically detects when the brainwaves are properly ordered and feeds that information back to the patient in real time. 

Here is How it Works!

The patient watches a show or movie or plays a game of their choice to ensure maximum focus and interest. Focus and interest are important because they keep the brain engaged in what it is doing rather than becoming bored. As the patient watches the tv, the EEG is monitoring how the brainwaves are behaving and regulating. 

When the brainwaves start to dysregulate, the BrainCore computer system recognizes the imbalance and the screen that the patient is watching begins to darken and the audio becomes lower. The brain does not like to watch a dark screen or struggle to hear the audio.  This causes a natural neurological response to focus and attempt to continue watching whatever the patient is interested in watching.  As the patient focuses, the brainwaves naturally begin to regulate properly; this is recognized by the software which then triggers the screen to brighten to a level that is pleasing once more. 

The same process occurs with the audio of the video or game the patient is watching. This is what creates the feedback loop between the brain and the computer software. In other words, brainwave dysregulation enables a darker screen and when the brainwaves start to regulate optimally, it enables a brighter, easier screen to view.

This method can be used to treat a myriad of symptoms and conditions depending on the level and area of brainwave dysregulation and desynchronization.
